One very special skyscraper can be admired between the many towers in the Dubai Marina. While all the other skyscrapers are straight, there is one that revolves on its own axis. That’s the Cayan Tower. Since its opening in 2013, this tower with a height of 306 meters and 73 floors is officially the tallest tower in the world and rotates 90 degrees around its own axis.
Located in the Dubai Marina
The Cayan Tower can be found at the start of the Marina Walk, next to the bridge over the water and near the sea. If you walk on the Marina Walk, the tower is quickly recognizable thanks to its striking twisted appearance.
Many towers are being built around and it seems unstoppable. This has ensured that this tower with its striking appearance no longer comes into its own in the photos. But what a fine piece of technology and design it is. This tower deserves a closer look.
Tower construction and design
The Cayan Tower, which was known as the Infinity Tower until its opening. It was realized by the United Arab Emirates company Cayan Real Estate Investment and Development. Construction of the 330 meter high tower started in 2006 and was halted for a number of years, partly due to the flooding of the construction site and the economic crisis.
The striking tower is designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill SOM architectural group, who designed also the famous Burj Khalifa and Trump Tower in Chicago.
Just like the Turning Torso tower in Malmö, Sweden, the Cayan Tower also rotates on its own axis. To accomplish this, each floor rotates 1.2 degrees relative to the floor below to form the full 90-degree spiral. In order not to expose the rooms too much to direct sunlight, a special solution was chosen. Various titanium panels have been mounted on the outside of the tower, with screens behind them that can be opened and closed, so that sunlight cannot shine directly into the apartments.
The tower contains 570 residential units, 495 of which are luxury apartments, the other residential units are luxury penthouses which are equipped with all comforts. There are also several conference rooms in the tower, as well as several swimming pools, tennis courts, a fitness room and even its own spa.
